5 Ways for Children to Serve the Community Over Summer Break

Summer is a perfect time for giving. After a busy year of growing and learning from others, summer break is a chance to give back—to put time, energy and love into the community. Serving the community is a meaningful and fun way to make new friends, find new interests and cultivate a sense of purpose. Here are five ways for children to get involved over summer break:

Help Out a Food Bank

Volunteering in food distribution at a local food bank is a hands-on, rewarding way to support the community and directly help families facing hunger. Children may not realize that, for some of their peers, summer isn’t an easy time, with school meals they count on each day not being available. But your child can help!

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida welcomes students as young as 10 and their parents to volunteer. They also host special events designed specifically for children ages 5-9, a perfect opportunity for younger students to get involved in helping others. Participating in these events allows children to learn about giving back while having a good time and connecting with their community.

Participate in a Clean Up

If your child is looking for a fun, active way to give back, organizing a cleanup with friends at the neighborhood park or a local beach is an excellent option. Encourage them to get together with friends, grab some gloves and trash bags, and challenge themselves to collect as much litter as possible within a set time. It’s a simple way to improve the community, protect the environment and give children an opportunity to spend time outdoors while working as a team.

For a more organized experience, Orlando-based groups like IDEAS for Us offer hands-on eco-action events for children and parents twice a month. Children of all ages can join projects focused on energy, water, food, waste, and ecology. All they need is a pair of closed-toe shoes, a water bottle and a willingness to get messy!

Join a Catholic Charity Organization

Helping people in need is a meaningful opportunity for older children to give back during summer break. By participating in hands-on activities, they can make an impactful difference in someone’s life. These experiences build empathy, strengthen community connections and show children the power of small acts of kindness.

One way to get involved is through Catholic Charities of Central Florida, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals and families across Central Florida through a wide range of programs and services. They welcome volunteers as young as 12 years old.

Volunteer at an Animal Shelter

For children who love animals, volunteering at a local shelter can be a heartwarming and rewarding experience. Many animal services organizations welcome young volunteers with parents to help with daily tasks. These small efforts help shelters care for pets waiting for forever homes and teach children compassion and responsibility.

Check your local animal services department to learn about age-appropriate opportunities near you. If there aren’t any openings, don’t worry—shelters often need supplies. For example, the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando accepts donations of new, unopened bags and cans of dog and cat food.

Become a Volunteer at Church

Volunteering as a family can be a powerful way to bond while giving back. From helping with weekend programs to assisting with events or organizing supplies, volunteering at church teaches children the value of serving others through faith and community. Get the whole family together and explore volunteer opportunities at your church!

At our Orlando Catholic school, located in the Catholic Diocese of Orlando, serving the community is part of the curriculum. St. Charles Borromeo encourages students to put their faith into action through service. By learning to care for others, they follow the example of Christ and become thoughtful, responsible members of the community. Schedule a tour to learn more about our mission and values.
