Curriculum
Kindergarten
Students in kindergarten learn primarily through play. Early literacy skills that follow the science of reading guide daily formal lessons. Math skills are introduced using manipulatives and active learning techniques. Science and social studies are applied in cross-curricular activity-based learning. Religion is taught daily and prayer is infused throughout the day.
1st and 2nd Grade
The goal for students in first and second grade is to start establishing academic habits. Early literacy skills that follow the science of reading, including phonics and writing, guide daily ELA lessons. Math concepts are introduced using manipulatives, practices through application and assessed. Content areas of science and social studies are taught and assessed using multiple types of evaluation. Manuscript and cursive handwriting instruction remain an essential part of our SCBCS education plan. Religion is taught daily and prayer is infused throughout the day.
3rd and 4th Grade
The goal for students in third and fourth grade is to form solid academic habits. Literacy instruction has shifted from learning to read to comprehension and vocabulary. Students are becoming writers. Math concepts are growing in complexity, practiced through application and assessed. Content areas of science and social studies with a focus on Florida history and are taught and assessed using multiple types of evaluation. Cursive handwriting instruction remains an essential part of SCBCS education plan. Religion is taught daily and prayer is infused throughout the day.
5th Grade
The goal for students in fifth grade is to prepare for middle school. They are encouraged to become advocates for their learning and accountable for successes. ELA instruction includes novel studies, writing and grammar practice. Math concepts continue to grow in complexity, practiced through application and assessed. Content areas of science and social studies with a focus on ancient civilizations and world history are taught and assessed using multiple types of evaluation. Cursive handwriting instruction remains an essential part of SCBCS education plan. Religion is taught daily and prayer is infused throughout the day.
Middle School: 6th – 8th Grades
The goal for middle school students is to prepare for their academic journey in high school and beyond. Middle school students are independent learners and are provided opportunities for critical thinking. Students are researching, writing and presenting content. Math instruction offerings are tailored to individual learners and both standard and accelerated math classes are available. Religion is taught daily and prayer is infused throughout the day.
