5 Fun and Safe Ways to Stay Cool This Summer

Summer is one of the most fun times of year for children and families in sunny Florida. There’s so much to do, but one of the biggest focuses is trying to beat the heat. As a parent, keeping your kids and their friends entertained, safe and cool can be a challenge. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to do so. Here are five fun and safe activities to help you and your child stay cool this summer:

1. Set Up a Backyard Water Play Zone

The beach isn’t the only place where you can make a splash! Instead of packing beach bags, filling coolers and loading everyone into the car, turn your backyard into a water play zone. A sprinkler or a garden hose is all you need for a good time. You can also set up a small kiddie pool, slip-n-slide or water table with toys for some extra backyard fun. Just don’t forget to put on sunblock!

2. Take a Trip to the Community Pool or Local Splash Pad

If your kids are ready to get out of the house and get into some splash-filled fun, the community swimming pool or local splash pad is the place to go. Orlando has plenty of both to choose from, plus they’re usually free or low-cost. The pool or splash pad is a great place for kids to make friends and play with other kids, and these places are usually designed with safety in mind and may even have a lifeguard on duty. Remember to bring plenty of sunscreen and pack those water shoes!

3. Head to an Indoor Play Area or Trampoline Park

Every summer day in Florida is hot, but on those extra hot days when the UV index is especially high, it’s a good idea to bring the fun indoors. Indoor play areas and trampoline parks are great places to do this, and they’re not hard to find in Orlando. Indoor play areas and trampoline parks give children somewhere to jump, play and burn off some energy without burning up in the sun, and they keep parents in the AC.

4. Enjoy Frozen Treats

On those sunny days, there’s nothing more refreshing than a frozen treat. Turn it into a little activity and try making some at home. Homemade popsicles, frozen fruit skewers and smoothies are relatively simple to make, and they get the kids in the kitchen for some hands-on fun. Create an ice cream bar with different flavors and toppings, where your kids and their friends can make their own delicious sundaes. Or keep it simple by taking a trip to the local ice cream parlor or frozen yogurt shop. Either way, you’re staying cool while enjoying a sweet treat.

5. Have a Movie Marathon in the Living Room

Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is to stay inside and enjoy the AC. Close the curtains, grab some snacks and let each person choose a movie for an all-day marathon. Make sure everyone’s comfy by setting up plenty of pillows and cushions. When choosing drinks and snacks, keep them cool and refreshing, like frozen grapes, popsicles and ice-cold lemonade. A movie marathon with friends or family in the living room is the perfect low-effort way to stay cool and recharge before the next outdoor summer adventure!
