6 Bible Stories That Build Children’s Character

The Bible is full of stories that teach timeless lessons, encouraging children to grow in character. These stories help children see how people who faced challenges and leaned on God’s teachings were not only successful but also embodied the example of faith outlined in Scripture. These lessons foster important values that will guide them in everyday life. Here are six Bible stories that build children’s character:

The Parable of the Good Samaritan – Kindness

In Luke 10, a lawyer asks Jesus what he must do to have eternal life. Jesus explains to him that he must be a good neighbor. When the lawyer asks Jesus what He means by this, Jesus tells a story about a good Samaritan who saw a man lying in the street who had been robbed. He explained that two others had seen the same man, but had walked past him. The good Samaritan stopped to help him, caring for his wounds and bringing him to a nearby inn.

The good Samaritan went out of his way to help someone in need with no expectation of a reward or repayment. This story teaches children the importance of kindness and how it pleases God when we show compassion toward others.

Noah’s Ark – Trust

When God sent a flood to earth in the book of Genesis, He instructed Noah to build an ark for him, his wife, his sons, his sons’ wives, and two of every animal (male and female), to board. God explained that this ark would protect Noah’s family and the animals while the earth was flooded for hundreds of days. Even though it seemed impossible that Noah’s family and the animals would survive the flood, Noah trusted God’s Word and built the ark. After the flood was over, Noah, his family and the animals exited the ark unharmed.

Noah trusted in what God had promised and followed His instructions, even though it seemed impossible. In doing so, Noah saw that what God had promised was true, and because he obeyed, he pleased God. This story teaches children the importance of trusting in God’s promises and doing what is good according to His Word.

David and Goliath – Courage and Faith

In 1 Samuel 17, David, a young man and shepherd, faces Goliath, a giant warrior. Everyone else hid in fear because of the giant’s size and intimidating stature. David wasn’t a strong warrior like Goliath, and, in fact, everyone warned David not to fight him. But David wasn’t afraid. Instead, he had courage in the Lord, knowing that God would protect him. He was triumphant against Goliath because of his faith in God’s strength.

Even when the situation was intimidating and everyone was scared, David had courage because he knew God was there to help him. This teaches children that courage doesn’t depend on size or strength, but on faith in God.

Joseph’s Journey – Patience, Perseverance, and Forgiveness

The book of Genesis tells the story of Joseph’s journey through many hardships that began due to his brothers’ jealousy. Joseph had dreams of being a leader whom others looked up to. His brothers disliked the idea of Joseph reigning over them and were jealous that he was their father’s favorite, so they sold him into slavery. From there, Joseph was imprisoned and forgotten by his family. Despite his circumstances, he remained faithful and patient, knowing that God hadn’t forgotten him. Joseph eventually rose to a position of power in Egypt that allowed him to help others, including saving his family from famine.

Joseph’s journey in the Bible teaches children to be patient throughout troubling times because God will help them persevere. It also teaches an important lesson about forgiveness. Even though Joseph went through these trials because of his family’s actions, he forgave them and helped them in their time of need.

The Widow’s Offering – Generosity

In Matthew 12, Jesus watches people give money to the treasury, including many rich people who gave large sums of money. When He sees a poor widow give two coins to the treasury, He tells His disciples that this woman gave more than the rich people did. He teaches them that it isn’t because of the amount she gave, it’s that she gave despite the fact that she was poor and needed it for herself. The others gave what they could and still had an abundance. This woman gave everything she had with nothing left over.

The story of the widow’s offering teaches children that generosity isn’t about how much you give in terms of dollar value, but the heart you have when you give. Even the smallest gifts matter greatly when they’re given out of the goodness of your heart.
