Learning doesn’t stop after graduating from school. The Bible encourages us to continue growing and learning throughout our lives, not just in knowledge, but in wisdom, faith and understanding. Lifelong learning is woven into our faith because growing closer to God is a continuous journey, and the more we learn, the more deeply connected we become. Whether we’re studying Scripture, learning from others or gaining insight through experiences, our pursuit of knowledge reflects our desire to live according to our faith and service to God. Read on to learn about what the Bible teaches us about lifelong learning.
We Should Continuously Seek Wisdom
The call to seek wisdom is present throughout the Bible, especially in Proverbs, which is the book of wisdom. Proverbs 4:7 says, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.” This isn’t limited to one season of life, or just to learning while we’re in school; it’s a continuous pursuit. God consistently reminds us in His Word to seek the truth in all things. By committing to gaining wisdom, we align ourselves with God’s will and remain open to His guidance.
We Should Follow Jesus’s Example
Even Jesus took time to learn and grow. Luke’s Gospel records Jesus at age twelve sitting among the teachers in the temple, listening, asking questions and learning. Luke 2:52 says, “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.” This demonstrates to us that as Jesus grew older, he grew in wisdom, which led him to gain God’s favor. His example shows us that it pleases God when we embrace a life of learning.
The Bible is Our Guide
Just as students use textbooks to learn about academic subjects, Scripture is our greatest tool for learning life lessons. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us, “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” reminding us that the Bible is the ultimate guide for spiritual growth. Scripture isn’t something we read once and move on; it’s a continuous source of wisdom and direction. Each time we study the Bible, we discover new insights and gain a deeper understanding, which helps us navigate our lives according to faith.
Learning Requires Humility
It’s impossible to know everything, and accepting that we don’t is an important part of learning. In Proverbs 11:2, it says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace; but wisdom is with the humble.” This teaches us the very essence of choosing humility over pride. When we keep an open mind and maintain a teachable spirit, we allow God and others to teach us, thus allowing wisdom to grow. This is the type of heart posture we must have to become wiser, more compassionate and more like Christ.
We’re a Community of Learners
We were never meant to do life alone. Scripture constantly reminds us of the importance of community in remaining strong in our faith. As Proverbs 27:17 states, “Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens the wits of another.” This tells us that we are to learn from others as well as teach others what we have learned. Whether it’s family members, fellow churchgoers or the people we meet in our communities, we’re called to learn from and with each other. God uses our relationships to teach us about love, patience and service. Lifelong learning is a shared journey, and we grow deeper in knowledge and in faith when we do it together.
Learning Equips Us for God’s Purpose
God lovingly designed each of us with a unique purpose. Dedicating our lives to the process of learning isn’t just about gaining knowledge; it’s about God preparing us to live out His purpose for us. In Colossians 1:9-10, Paul and Timothy stress the importance of gaining the knowledge, wisdom and understanding of God so that we may be equipped to do good works in His name. As we learn and grow, we become better prepared to serve, lead and reflect the goodness of Christ in our daily lives.
The Bible teaches us that learning is a lifelong pursuit of wisdom, understanding and spiritual growth.
