After a relaxing summer vacation, some students find it hard to get back into the swing of things in the school year. They may find that they’re so used to having no plans that they’re not sure how to handle a more structured day. However, children thrive on routines once they figure them out. Here are some tips for setting your student up for success this school year:
Start the Routine Early
Hit the ground running with school routines. Establish bedtime and wake up times as soon as your child is back in school. Consider a slightly more relaxed evening and morning routine for the weekend while they adjust to their new schedule.
Get Organized
Set up a designated study space where your child can study and do homework in peace, making sure it has all the school supplies they need. Create a central calendar for keeping track of schedules and assignments so no one in your family misses a thing.
Plan Meals in Advance
Create a meal plan for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Prep meals or ingredients ahead of time so when the morning comes, it will be easier to get up and out the door on time. Encourage healthy eating habits so your child will be fueled for what’s to come at school.
Establish a Homework Routine
Set aside a designated time and place for homework each day, and create a system for keeping track of assignments. If your child completes their homework early, review it with them and make sure it’s complete. When they get into a good rhythm, consider rewarding them for buckling down and getting the work done.
Encourage Physical Activity
Incorporate regular exercise into everyone’s daily routine. Make sure your child is getting plenty of exercise and sunshine so they can stay at the top of their game. Schedule family walks of bike rides on the weekend to keep the activity going on weekends.
Limit Screen Time
Set boundaries for screen time during the school week, especially at night. If it would help your family, consider implementing a digital detox plan, setting aside time for activities that don’t involve screens.
Encourage Good Sleep Habits
Establish a bedtime routine as a family to help your child get adequate sleep. Set limits on electronic devices in the bedroom, especially mobile handheld devices that can be especially disruptive of sleep. Create a relaxing environment for sleep. This may include lavender sprays, blackout curtains and other comfort items.
Stay Positive and Flexible
Encourage a positive attitude toward school by being positive about school. Celebrate your child’s successes, and give them grace when they struggle. Be flexible and willing to adjust the family’s routine if needed. If your child tries something new and doesn’t like it, see if there’s another activity they’ll enjoy more. If they’re showing signs of being overscheduled, consider what can be removed or adjusted to create better balance.
Communicate with Teachers and School Staff
Establish open lines of communication with teachers early on in the school year. Attend school events and parent-teacher conferences. Being involved in your child’s education is one of the best ways you can support your child and know what’s going on during their time away from home.
