Teaching Principles of Love and Compassion in the Classroom

Catholic schools combine rigorous academics with spiritual teachings, allowing students to learn about love and compassion as part of a well-rounded education. They learn how to love themselves, each other and God. Catholic school campuses are filled with staff and faculty who are committed to helping students understand and spread God’s love. Here are some of the principles these students learn and how they’re emphasized at Catholic schools.

Human Dignity

According to Catholic teachings, each living person has an inherent dignity that should be respected. This base level of dignity does not change due to behavior or circumstances. Each person’s value is granted to them by God and therefore can’t be taken away. All people are created in God’s image and have been redeemed by Christ.

In Catholic schools, this principle is applied by teaching children to love and respect themselves and others around them. Service to those less fortunate, which is heavily emphasized in Catholic schools, also stems from the idea that every person deserves love and grace.

Common Good

Love and compassion is shown most often by Catholics through how they function in society. Working toward the common good means creating a society that gives equal opportunity for every person to thrive. Ideally, creating this type of world will give everyone the chance to contribute to a just society in their own way.

Catholic school students learn about ways they can help create a world that allows everyone to flourish. The idea is to create a society where the easiest option is to be good, rather than one where the right decision is often the most difficult one.

Honoring Individuality

Catholic schools view each student as a unique child of God. They offer a variety of classes and extracurricular activities that allow students to learn who they are while obtaining a compassionate education. Class sizes tend to be small, which allows each student to receive a more individualized education.

Students at Catholic schools have the opportunity to pray together, play together and work together on projects, both in the classroom and in the community. This provides each student with plenty of chances to learn about their role in the world and how they can make it a better place.

Love and compassion are two of the most important principles of Catholic education.
