When you think of summer family vacations, luxury cruises and international trips may be the first things to come to mind. However, summer break doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. You can have just as much fun without going too far from home or dipping into your savings. Here are a few affordable activities we recommend trying this summer.
See the Mermaid Show
Did you know you can see mermaids in Florida? Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Spring Hill has an underwater theater that’s famous for its mermaid shows. After you watch the dazzling mermaid show, you can go swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and even sliding down water slides at the on-site water park. There are plenty of options at Weeki Wachee Springs Park for everyone in the family.
Have a Picnic
Whether you want to spend the day before your picnic making homemade hummus and crudites or you prefer to pack frozen Uncrustables, there’s nothing like a picnic at your favorite park. All you need is a picnic blanket, a cooler and your favorite drinks and snacks to plan out a day of making memories. Just make sure to check the weather forecast before you leave.
Go to the Museum
Museums provide affordable, educational and unique experiences, and you can find them just about anywhere. One of the most popular museums in Florida is the John and Mable Ringling Museum of art, which features a circus museum, an art museum, and gardens. A couple other notable museums in Florida are the Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach and the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum. Any of these museums would make for a great day trip.
Spend a Day at the Fair
Fairs and carnivals roll into town during the summer months, and they can be a great affordable option for families. These pop-up amusement parks are full of rides, snacks and shows that can keep everyone entertained for a day. Everyone has at least one memory from their childhood of an amazing snack they had or a ride that seemed to go a little too fast at the fair. Help your child make theirs by bringing them to one of these fun, affordable attractions.
Take a Hike
Hikes don’t have to be epic treks through the mountains. You can find a nature trail just about anywhere, from state parks to nature preserves. If you want to take a walk in nature that’s a little more curated, consider taking a trip to a place like Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales or Vizcaya Museum & Gardens in Miami. There are all kinds of places you can go to explore nature, especially in Florida.
