How to Add Catholic Devotions to Your Summer Vacation

When you’re planning a summer vacation, it’s easy to get distracted. You have so many items on your to-do list that you may forget to set aside time for the most important thing — your faith. Planning time to get together as a family in prayer can be one of the best ways to create meaningful summer memories. Here are some ways you can incorporate Catholic devotions into your summer vacation.

Bring Your Rosary with You

Praying the Rosary every day will help you get into the proper mindset by connecting you with the saints and the Blessed Mother. Often, it’s a form of contemplative prayer or meditation that’s done on an individual level. However, it can be done as a family, with one person leading the group by saying the first half of each prayer. Some will say that praying the Rosary with others is the best way.

“There is no surer means of calling down God’s blessings upon the family… than the daily recitation of the Rosary.”

— Pope Pius XII

Find Opportunities to Pray

Traveling can be hectic, especially when you’re bringing the whole family along for the ride. Start your journey with a prayer to help center the family as they prepare for the trip. Say grace while eating, even if it’s at public places like restaurants. As each day winds down, say a prayer of thanksgiving for the opportunity to spend this quality time with your family. There are many ways to incorporate prayer into your vacation.

Keep Attending Mass

Most places you’re likely to visit this summer, you’ll be able to find a Catholic church. If you’re able to work it into your itinerary, find time to attend Mass. Even if it’s not on Sunday, working Mass into your schedule on vacation will help your children understand its importance. Not all vacations have this kind of wiggle room. If that’s the case for the trip you’re taking, consider making the Sign of the Cross as you pass by Catholic churches and inviting your children to do the same.

Seek God Outside of Church

The opportunity to spend quality time with your family during the summer and explore new places can be seen as blessings from God. Look for signs of Him wherever you are, whether you’re out in nature or in a bustling city. When you and your family seek God, even while on vacation, you’ll be sure to find Him.
